A Malaysian national oil and gas company (NOC), a Fortune Global 500 company since 1997, and 8-time F1 constructors champion
6 years 6 months (2017-2023)
PETRONAS Upstream
General scope: Provided process engineering solutions, managed deviations, and ensured compliance with safety and technical standards to maximize plant availability and production performance.
Debottlenecked a gas central processing platform (CPP) topside, increasing maximum production capacity by 9%. Reviewed process adequacy of separators, compressors, cooling system, flare system, export pipeline, produced water treatment system. Led a multidisciplinary team consisting of process, reservoir, pipeline, instrument, static, rotating, PSM, and reliability engineers. Engaged with various technical experts to ensure holistic and safe management of change (MOC). The production increment generated up to USD23mil/year since 2020 up to today.
Conducted a flow assurance and economic analysis using OLGA software to evaluate the cost-effective isolation method for a riser shutdown (SDV) valve replacement. Used the up-to-date compositional analysis, and incorporated pressure, temperature and flow trends into the simulation model. Developed specific procedure steps required for the depressurization to be done safely to avoid potential asset damage. Saved the company USD1mil by recommending the more cost-effective method.
Reviewed various asset development projects - both greenfield and brownfield - related to offshore gas platforms and onshore gas-and-condensate terminals including: Infill drilling, new gas terminal, process simplification, condensate tie-in to existing plant, condensate recovery plant; phases including feasibility studies, concept select, FEED and detailed engineering; each review includes process flow diagrams (PFD) & piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&ID) reviews, simulation models and basis, HAZOP, safety instrumented systems (SIS).
Conducted various safety assessments to ensure compliance, including: Flare adequacy, alarm management, relief (PSV) adequacy (as per API 520 and 521), SIS classification, alignment of cause-and-effect matrix and trips (SIS), periodic HAZOPs.
Conducted numerous facilities improvements studies, including offshore platform flare reduction, dehydration unit vent cooler installation, water injection upgrading, nitrogen inadequacy troubleshooting. Each study encompasses feasibility studies, concept select and engineering.
Team member of multiple incident investigations and root cause failure analysis, providing insights from a process engineering perspective. Investigations/failure analysis include: Condensate pump fire, compressor high vibration, gas release during break flange, pump frequent failure, plant cascading trip, offshore high oil-in-water produced water discharge.
Developed an interactive calculator for economics feasibility analysis for GHG reduction projects.

PETRONAS Upstream
General scope: Ensured the process safety and compliance to standards by enforcing 8 process safety aspects, conducted hazard analyses, and implemented mitigation strategies; planned and executed assurances of hard safety barriers to ensure minimal risks of operations.
Facilitated over 80 risk assessments, including hazards identification (HAZID), hazards and operability studies (HAZOP), pre-shutdown and pre-startup safety review (procedural HAZOP), upholding high safety standards while maintaining production.
Part of PSM pioneering team in PETRONAS Upstream. Tracked development of standards and guidelines, conducted roadshows to offshore platforms, onshore terminals and offices, conducted trainings and streamlined development of operating procedures.
Completed holistic updating of drawings & documents for 5 offshore complexes (spanning 10 facilities), including P&ID, PFD, heat and material balance (HMB), operating procedures and manual (OPM), and relief blowdown adequacy. Achieved 100% completion in 17 months.
Streamlined process safety key indicators reporting to upper management. Standardized definitions of key indicators (utilizing API RP 754 and CCPS Process Safety Metrics guideline) and method of tracking, performed monthly reporting to management, providing key insights on areas of focus and way forward. Among the key highlights: Reduced 74% of safety bypasses through close monitoring, multidisciplinary risk assessments (RA), and closure of action items arising from those RA.
Was certified TÜV Rheinland Functional Safety (FS) Engineer for Process Safety & Risk Assessment (PH&RA) 15156/17 Aug 2017 - Aug 2022. Certification covers quantitative risk assessment (QRA), layers of protection analysis (LOPA), failure mode & effects analysis (FMEA), BowTie.
Developed loss of containment (LOC) calculation sheet (in line with CCPS threshold quantities), recognized and implemented by 4 regions of Upstream, used as basis of the Company’s online LOC calculator.
